About Bladder Problems

Causes of Bladder Problems

Incontinence is a symptom of other disorders; it is not a disease itself. Incontinence can occur for many reasons: Loss of muscle control due to aging, childbirth, bladder infection, side effects of medications, spinal injury, prostate and or other surgery, overweight, nervous system disorders (such as MS) and diabetes.

If you feel you have a problem with involuntary loss of urine, the first step is to acknowledge the problem.

Remember you are not alone!

Types of Urinary Incontinence

Stress Incontinence is caused by the sudden increase of intra-abdominal pressure. This will cause small amounts of leakage with a cough, sneeze, bend, laugh, or when lifting a heavy object.

Urge Incontinence will usually be a large volume of leakage and it occurs on the way to the bathroom. This is the “Cannot Hold It” syndrome.

Overflow Incontinence is small amounts of urine leaking frequently from a bladder that is constantly full.

Reflex Incontinence is loss of bladder control due to impaired nerve function.
