October Health Message: Pelvic Floor Health

This October, YUA Yakima is shining a light on a topic that’s often overlooked but deeply impacts the lives of people across our community: pelvic floor health. Whether you’re a new parent, an athlete, a caregiver, or simply navigating the changes that come with aging, your pelvic floor plays a vital role in your overall well-being.

What Is Pelvic Floor?

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles and connective tissues located at the base of your pelvis. These muscles support your bladder, bowel, and—for those with a uterus—your reproductive organs. They help control urination, bowel movements, sexual function, and even posture and stability.

When these muscles are strong and coordinated, they work quietly in the background. But when they’re weakened, tight, or injured, they can lead to a range of issues—from incontinence and pelvic pain to prolapse and sexual dysfunction.

What Can You Do

This October, we invite you to take small steps toward better pelvic floor health:

  • Learn the signs: If you experience leaking when you laugh, sneeze, or exercise, or feel pressure or pain in your pelvic area, talk to a provider.
  • Practice pelvic floor exercises: Kegels are a great start, but not everyone needs strengthening—some need relaxation. A pelvic health specialist can help you find the right approach.
  • Support others: Normalize conversations about pelvic health. Share resources, listen without judgment, and encourage loved ones to seek care.
  • Connect with local providers: Ask your doctor about pelvic floor physical therapy or referrals to specialists.
