Electromyography

(sEMG)

sEMG or skin Electromyography is a process that helps patients strengthen and relax their pelvic floor muscles. It functions as a teaching tool for the patient to develop greater muscle control.

Surface electrodes placed appropriately on the abdomen monitor both abdominal and pelvic floor activity. Simultaneous monitoring of the activity of the pelvic floor and accessory muscles makes it easier for patients to learn to isolate their pelvic floor muscles and develop better control

Orion

The Orion monitor provides the ability to simultaneously monitor up to four muscle sites for comprehensive pelvic floor assessment. By monitoring strategic muscle sites, the nurse can identify which relevant exercise approach is needed for each patient.

Respiration and Temperature Monitoring

Respiration feedback is used to teach coordination of breathing and muscle contraction, and is particularly useful for incontinence patients with a tendency to hold their breath and bear down when instructed to contract their pelvic floor muscle. Temperature is typically used for assisted relaxation training in order to cultivate lower autonomic arousal levels, which can be of particular benefit for patients with urge UI.
